When I first started my business, I decided to ignore security measures altogether, which caused me to net a loss for the year. However, after a suggestion from my mentor, I decided that it might be wise to install a nice security system. You wouldn't believe how much better things got. Within a few weeks, theft was almost completely eliminated. My blog is all about helping you to tighten up security measures.

Kids Sleep Through Fire Alarms: How You Can Keep Your Kids Safe

by Victoria George

With the loud sound generated by a fire alarm, you'd think that your child would wake up after hearing it. However, a study found that children are more likely to sleep through a fire alarm. Even if children do eventually wake up, it may be too late. Every minute in a fire is crucial, especially as the amount of smoke builds and makes it increasingly harder to breathe. But with the right type of alarm and with a good escape plan, your children will be more likely to escape.

Getting the Right Alarm

If you aren't sure if your child will be able to wake up with a fire alarm, find an alarm that allows you to manually trigger it so you can test your child to determine if he or she will wake up. If not, an alternative option is to purchase a smoke alarm that allows you to record your voice. Then, when the fire alarm triggers, your child will hear your voice and may possibly be more likely to wake up.

The alarm can also deliver specific evacuation instructions for when your child forgets the correct way to leave your home. Directional speakers can direct the voice to your child's bed. Children are much less likely to sleep through a parent alarm.

Creating an Escape Plan

Always review an escape plan with your child ahead of time. Practice evacuating your home. Give your oldest or your most responsible child extra responsibilities, such as making sure that all of your other kids are safely out of the house. The little ones are unlikely to get out of your house without assistance from an older sibling. But all of your children need a backup plan because the eldest sibling may fall unconscious because of smoke.

Every room should have at least two ways out of the room. Your children should know which option to choose first and to not use an exit that is very hot or has a lot of smoke pouring out. Your child should know not to open a door if the doorknob is hot. Because smoke is the most common reason that people succumb to a fire, remind your children to keep low to the ground while leaving. There should also be a meet-up place for your family in case they are separated. Because fire alarms are not enough for children, by being prepared, you can avoid a tragedy.
