4 Ways to Build a Safe Home Automation System

by Victoria George

With a home automation system, you are setting up your home so that you can remotely control various aspects of your home, such as your light system, security system, and HVAC system. It can make it easier for you to control your home; simultaneously, you need to ensure that you set up the system in a smart manner to prevent hacking.

Way #1: Be Careful With Your Password

First, you need to be careful with your password for all of the various devices attached to your system. Often, the password for many pieces of equipment is set to be the word "password" or something simple like "1234" or "abcd." You should never stick with such simple passwords; those are weak and are some of the first passwords that someone would guess if they tried to hack into your equipment.

Instead, you should create a unique password for your devices. It should contain a random mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols and utilize upper- and lower-case letters. A complex password ensures that you are the only one who has access to your home automation system.

Way #2: Use Your Own Internet

Second, when you are setting up a home automation system, it is vitally important that you use your own internet. Each device in your system will need to connect to the internet to allow you remote control over the devices. You should not connect to any free Wi-Fi spots to control and use your devices. Free Wi-Fi spots don't have the same level of security as your internet system does. You should ensure your devices are connected to your home router and that you have strong password protection in place for your home router.

Way #3: Regularly Update Your Devices

Third, you are going to want to update your devices regularly. If you get a notification that one of the devices in your home automation system needs to be updated, you will want to update it right away. You will also want to keep whatever phone or operating system you use to control your home automation system up to date. These updates help to keep your full system safe.

Way #4: Work With a Respected Company

Fourth, when it comes to setting up a home automation system, you will want to work with a respected security company to set up your system. They will ensure that your system is set up in a manner that will keep it safe.

With home automation, you are going to want to ensure that you set it up safely. You will want to select a complex password, use your own internet, regularly keep all devices and systems connected updated, and work with a respected company to set up your home automation system.
